The Fort Indiantown Gap National Guard Training Center relies heavily on Geographic Information Systems for its logistics planning and resource management. In 2007 geographIT provided personnel from the PA Department of Military and Veteran Affairs (DMVA) four GIS courses. Each participant had a computer with access to ArcGIS 9.2 ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo licenses. All courses included intensive hands-on use of the software and data through guided group examples as well as individual exercises. Class demonstrations and exercises incorporated client data, as stored in a variety of formats: shapefiles, personal geodatabases, and enterprise geodatabase (SQL Server 2005). The courses were tailored to address specific DMVA GIS needs, such as editing gate features for traffic control, CAD data integration, and enterprise data management best practices.The series began with an introduction to GIS software (a two-day course) followed by an advanced ArcGIS course (three-day course). These initial classes provided a foundation of GIS principles combined with building competency using ArcGIS Desktop core applications, ArcMap and ArcCatalog. The final two courses focused on database design, data editing and management issues related to enterprise databases and data distribution. “Managing Data in an Enterprise GIS”, the first of these higher-level classes, was a three-day course. “Editing Workflows for an Enterprise Geodatabase (Versioning)” was the two-day course that concluded the series.
