Lancaster, Pennsylvania (May 1, 2011) – The City of Philadelphia Streets Department was recently awarded a 2010-2011 Technology Solutions Award by the Public Technology Institute (PTI) for a project submission titled “Optimizing Traffic Signal LED Installation Using Mobile GIS Technology”. The award was in recognition of the City’s mobile GIS asset inventory solution to conduct an inventory of light-emitting diode (LED) traffic signal bulbs as the Streets Department replaces incandescent bulbs in order to save energy and reduce operating costs. The award notice and project description can be viewed online at www.pti.org/solutions/2011/ under the Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) category. According to PTI’s web site, “this annual competition recognizes PTI members who demonstrate how they use technology to solve problems, reduce costs, and improve services and internal operations.”
geographIT® was the developer of the mobile LED solution which used ESRI’s ArcGIS Server Mobile API implemented on Intermec GPS enabled handheld devices with barcode scanner attachments so that LED records can be quickly added to the inventory database. The mobile GIS solution supports field editing a geodatabase of poles, traffic signal heads and bulbs, and traffic sign attachments, with back office database synchronization of field edits to update the production geodatabase.
“We are honored to receive the PTI award”, said Marion Storey, Director of IT for the Streets Department. "This award recognizes the efficiency and improved data quality that mobile GIS technology can offer asset management by incorporating field data edits and database synchronization with a streamlined quality control process.“
