Lancaster, Pennsylvania (June 1, 2011) – Use of PAMAPP’s statewide Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) dataset to wireless map broadband coverage in Pennsylvania was the topic presented by Mr. Andrew Ross, Senior GIS Analyst, at the 2011 PA GIS Conference held May 24-25 in Grantville, Pennsylvania. The presentation focused on methodology used for producing a surface elevation including structures and tree canopy, and processing terabytes of data to derive cell tower heights and composite line-of-site broadband coverage based on known tower locations. The presentation also discussed software tools used to support data processing. At the same conference, PAMAPPS recognized this project with a 2011 Geospatial Excellence Award because of the “complexity of the scope and the technological innovation of the production methodology.”
